Intel's drone light show breaks all records at 2018 Winter Olympics

Finally like transformers in the sky, then changed again to form the intersecting Olympic Rings.

More than 1,200 drones lit up the sky at the opening ceremony for the Winter Olympics.

A record-setting 1,218 drones shot into the sky and traveled to a nearby ski slope, first taking on the shape of a moving snowboarder and later rearranging themselves into the iconic interlocking five Olympic rings.

The light show used Intel's Shooting Star drones, which were also featured in Lady Gaga's Super Bowl halftime show past year, and at Intel's CES keynote back in January.

The 1,218-drone light show in South Korea was pre-recorded. Hot of the back of a drone display at CES in Las Vegas, they are using the drone displays to begin conversations about their technology and are even showing off the future of connectivity with a 5G demonstration at the Olympics Winter Games.

The XXIII Olympic Winter Games is being held in Pyeongchang, South Korea from February 9 to 25.

Tech giant Intel says unexpected last-minute "logistical challenges" forced it to scrap plans to launch hundreds of small drones that were to put on a light show as part of the pageantry at the Winter Olympics opening ceremony.

The Intel Shooting Star drones are a type of unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) specifically designed for entertainment purposes, equipped with LED lights that can create countless colour combinations and easily be programmed for any animation.

Despite the complexity of their routines, all of the drones used during an air show are controlled by a single computer and one drone pilot on the ground, according to Intel.

Because Intel's drones had never flown in such cold temperatures, members of the drone light show team ventured to the Alps to test how they would operate in minus-10 degree Celsius weather. "But still, I do think the drone performance itself was very impressive".
