Carlos Cordeiro Elected as 32nd US Soccer President

The US Soccer Federation Presidential campaign has finally come to a close with federation Vice President Carlos Cordeiro edging out Soccer United Marketing President Kathy Carter and change candidate Eric Wynalda. Ex-players such as Wynalda, Caliguiri and Solo, as well as the savvy Steve Gans and his fellow attorney Michael Winograd, who dropped out a the end of the second round with a 0% share, had offered some hope. In their short speeches, the candidates made the case for how U.S. Soccer needs to change.

Any notion the electorate was in a mood for change was dispelled on the first ballot when Cordeiro and Carter received 71 percent of the combined vote and the other six candidates - the so-called gang of six - received just 29 percent.

Sunil Gulati has served as the leader of U.S. Soccer for more than a decade, and it's been a tumultuous journey at times.

But as the results of the second ballot were announced, it was clear that the two polarizing candidates - Carter and Wynalda - had, as many suspected would happen, had hit their ceilings.

Gans and Winograd then withdrew.

"To those of you who didn't vote for me, I'm going to work to earn your trust and your support over the next four years". All three of them are extreme long-shots though - of the eight candidates, only Carter, Cordeiro, Martino, and Wynalda are expected to gain the kind of support to have a real chance to win once the election process begins. I promise you I'm going to work together with all of you to bring us together as one united soccer community.

Cordeiro, a former Goldman Sachs executive, joined the federation's board as an independent director in 2007.

Cordeiro paid tribute to the outgoing Sunil Gulati, whom he replaces in the position, highlighting his "tireless service". He did not appear at the Gotsoccer.com or U.S. Club Soccer candidates forums - he had conflicts with Federation Internationale de Football Association and Concacaf meetings - nor did he do a one-on-one session at the United Soccer Coaches Convention in Philadelphia.

He revealed at the beginning of December that his current term would be his last. But the young talent coming up in U.S. Soccer is a great building block for the men's national team.

Gulati was blamed in some circles within the sport in the country for America being unable to secure a spot at the 2018 tournament, the first not to feature the nation since 1986. He now is charged with running the US end of a bid with Mexico and Canada for the right to host the 2026 World Cup.

A business executive with more than 30 years of experience in worldwide finance, he became a partner at Goldman Sachs in the early 1990s and was later appointed Vice Chairman-Asia.
