What was notable about the four days we had was that it was clear that Uber, under its previous CEO Travis Kalanick, was every bit as shady as suspected.
Uber bought Otto, the company Levandowski formed just before he quit Waymo in January 2016, in a $600-million stock deal. Uber fired Levandowski in May 2017.
Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi said in a statement that the company doesn't believe trade secrets made their way from Waymo to Uber. In negotiations past year, Waymo demanded $1 billion and an independent monitor to ensure none of its technology was being used.
Waymo filed its lawsuit after it mistakenly received an email meant for Uber executives that included images of a LiDAR-related computer chip that Waymo said was identical to its own design. The talks this time around started at $500 million, according to Reuters, and finished $245 million and a guaranteed.
Lawyers for Waymo pressed Mr Kalanick on allegations he orchestrated a theft of trade secrets from Waymo, via former Google employee Anthony Levandowksi.
The trade secrets case began on February 5th, 2018.
Levandowski, who isn't a defendant in the lawsuit, refused to answer questions from Waymo and turn over documents, citing his constitutional right against selfincrimination.
The surprise settlement announced Friday came as lawyers for Uber and Waymo, a company hatched from Google, prepared to wrap up the first week of a trial that had attracted worldwide attention. While the agreement might seem like a neat tie for both companies, Waymo has arguably come out on top. It's the Uber of Kalanick, the Uber of constant scandals and an nearly comical level of borderline-unethical practices.

Uber now has small pilots in Tempe, Arizona and Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The value of the shares ranges from $US153 million to $US245 million, depending on how you value Uber, a privately held company.
Self-driving research is an important initiative for Uber. Uber has completed 50,000 self-driving rides in Pittsburgh and Phoenix as of December, up from 30,000 in September. Settling also limits the restrictions Uber may have ultimately had to acquiesce to had a trial proceeded.
My job as Uber's CEO is to set the course for the future of the company: innovating and growing responsibly, as well as acknowledging and correcting mistakes of the past. Uber is now valued at about $54 billion.
The sad truth is probably because Uber can't afford to pay in cash. "I've told Alphabet that the incredible people at Uber ATG are focused on ensuring that our development represents the very best of Uber's innovation and experience in self-driving technology". He also apologized to Uber employees for the distraction the suit has caused.
The ride-hailing company wanted to show that Waymo couldn't have been too concerned about protecting its secrets back when an employee gift was a pair of earrings fashioned from printed circuit boards in an early version of Google's autonomous-vehicle technology.
Mr Kalanick said in a statement that, in making the acquisition of Otto, "Our sole objective was to hire the most talented scientists and engineers to help lead the company and our cities to a driverless future". The lawsuit was contentious, and Uber was accused of destroying evidence during discovery.
