MYANMAR: Jailed Journalists Were Investigating Massacre

The team of journalists working on the report managed to identify all 10 of the slain men in the photos and talk to their families and neighbors, thanks to a Buddhist village elder who provided them with the photo.

Reuters reporters said members of the paramilitary police gave insider descriptions of the operation to drive out the Rohingya from Inn Din and confirmed that the military played the lead role in the Myanmar massacre.

The two journalists have been accused under Section 3.1 (c) of the act, which covers entering prohibited places, and taking images or obtaining secret official documents that "might be or is meant to be, directly or indirectly, useful to an enemy", Reuters reported earlier this week. "The dead men were fishermen, shopkeepers, the two teenage students and an Islamic teacher".

The report is a detailed account of a massacre at Inn Din village in northern Rakhine that is linked to the arrest of two Reuters reporters accused of breaching the 1923 Official Secrets Act.

Similarities exist between the Reuters report and the account from the military.

A January statement by the Burmese army on the massacre of the 10 men said security forces were attacked by about 200 Bengalis with sticks and swords, and the security forces had opened fire into the sky, arresting 10 of the villagers while the remainder dispersed. It said a decision was made to kill them because there was no opportunity to take them to a police station. But Rohingya witnesses told Reuters that soldiers plucked the 10 from among hundreds of men, women and children who had sought safety on a nearby beach. "That's why we burned their houses, mainly for security reasons".

CNN cannotindependently confirm Reuters reporting as media access to the region tightly controlled.

In November 2017, Secretary of State Rex Tillerson characterized Myanmar security forces' treatment of the Rohingya as ethnic cleansing.

Reuters editor-in-chief Stephen Adler told the BBC the organization had decided it was their "responsibility" to publish what happened in Inn Din.

The report carries the bylines of Ko Wa Lone, 31, and Ko Kyaw Soe Oo, 27, who have been in custody since December 12 following their arrest while investigating the massacre.

Adler has saidpublic pressure on the Myanmar government was needed to ensure the two journalists were spared a long prison sentence.
