Shani Davis rips Team USA's decision on flag bearer after coin flip

On Thursday morning, Davis shared his feelings about the methodology in a Tweet, saying Team USA "dishonorably tossed a coin".

"I am an American and when I won the 1000m in 2010 I became the first American to 2-peat in that event", Davis tweeted. "No problem. I can wait until 2022", he wrote on February 8. Davis has been around since the 2006 Olympics, when he became the first black athlete to win an individual medal at the Winter Olympics. "Now being voted flag bearer is a whole new level", Hamlin said in a statement. A tie, per USOC rules, is broken by a coin flip.

Hamlin, the first woman chosen to carry the flag for the usa team since 2006, did not respond on social media to Davis.

"We've grown up watching the Olympics and we're always like, 'Who's going to be carrying the flag?' she said".

According to the U.S. Olympic Committee, the coin toss was the pre-determined method of choosing a victor in the event of a tie.

The coin toss went in favor of veteran luger Erin Hamlin after the final vote of the eight winter sports federations ended deadlocked at 4-4.

Luge racer Erin Hamlin will carry the U.S. flag in the 2018 Olympic Opening Ceremony, the U.S. Olympic committee announced Wednesday.

Hamlin's selection brought warm notice across social media, including from television outlets, elected officials, and the U.S. Olympic team.

According to the Associated Press (h/t ESPN.com), Hamlin and Davis were two of the eight candidates to carry the flag.

Perhaps even more puzzling is why Davis wasnt the overwhelming choice among his fellow USA athletes.

So much for smooth skating to kick off the 2018 Winter Olympics.
