Patriots offensive coordinator McDaniels announced as new Colts head coach

New England Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels looks on during the first half against the Houston Texans at Gillette Stadium on September 22, 2016 in Foxboro, Massachusetts. General manager Chris Ballard interviewed several persons, but he landed on McDaniels and introduced him to Irsay to have him sign off.

Still, the fact that McDaniels isn't actually backing out of his "wink and nod" agreement with the Colts is great news for Indianapolis, as the remaining coaching candidate pool is severely depleted from what it once was to start the interview process. The Colts finished 4-12 last season and missed the playoffs in three consecutive seasons for the first time in almost three decades.

McDaniels is supposed to be departing Bill Belichick's staff for the head coaching gig with the Indianapolis Colts. The final straw was when the National Football League fined McDaniels for not reporting that one of his assistants, without his knowledge, taped an opponent's practice. If Andrew Luck remains healthy, it's one of the more desirable jobs in the league. McDaniels helped Brady become the regular season MVP at the age of 40 and then Brady dominated on the biggest stage.

Whatever the case, McDaniels ultimately made a decision to follow through and take the Colts job.

He was the next man in line behind McDaniels, who acted as both an offensive coordinator and the quarterbacks coach. From the moment he arrived, Ballard has emphasized the importance of building a team from within, and getting the Draft right every year.

"One thing I told my wife, this week especially, we're fortunate enough to have the opportunity to go to the Super Bowl now back-to-back, to play in an awesome game for the third time in four years", Schuplinski said, according to Boston Herald's Jeff Howe. King also noted that the Patriots expect McDaniels to leave.
