Hyundai Santa Fe borrows Kona's style

Hyundai Santa Fe borrows Kona's style

Hyundai should officially reveal the Santa Fe later this month and then in person at the New York Auto Show at the beginning of April. The big SUV gets an all-new look as well as a range of infotainment and safety technologies. Looking basically nothing like its predecessor, the SUV adopts a bold exterior with an interesting front fascia featuring slim upper lights in the same vein as those of the eccentric Kona and the more recent Nexo hydrogen fuel-cell crossover.

We did expect to have to take the renders with a pinch of salt, but Hyundai has now released a couple of photos of the new Santa Fe and it looks pretty much as good as the renders. Hyundai said this means more room on the inside of the vehicle. The increased length and wheelbase providing what Hyundai claims is best-in-class legroom for the second row, while third-row headroom has also been increased.

Additionally, a new server-based voice recognition system incorporates artificial intelligence technology from Korean tech company Kakao to improve functionality and accuracy. Forward collision warning, lane departure warning, frontal collision avoidance and high-beam assist are all on the cards. It also has Safe Exist Assist to warn the passenger if he is about to open a door in the path of a nearby auto.

Engine choices include a 2.0 litre turbo petrol mill and 2.0 and 2.2 litre turbodiesels, although no output figures have been released just yet.

Comparing the front three-quarters shot to the recently renderings, it's evident the production Santa Fe actually looks a lot like what Hyundai had on the drawing board. The engines will be mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission.
