Toronto police search gardens for alleged serial killer victims

Toronto police have arrested 66-year-old landscaper Bruce McArthur, who has been charged with five counts of first-degree murder.

By 1999, McArthur was socializing with members of Toronto's gay community, according to a man who was friends with Skandaraj Navaratnam, a gay man who went missing in 2010.

Alleged serial killer Bruce McArthur was under police surveillance when officers were forced to make a quick decision to enter his home and arrest him, believing a life could be in danger, police sources confirm to the Toronto Star.

Almost two weeks after announcing McArthur was charged in the deaths of Selim Esen, 44, and Andrew Kinsman, 49, Toronto police Det.

He said that unidentified remains belonging to at least three people had been found in some of the planters on the properties under investigation.

Police searching 30 properties around the GTA and also near Madoc have made macabre discoveries, including finding "severed body parts" in the bottom of 12 large potted planters.

"I'm not going to say (the response) was lacklustre, I will say there are opportunities for us to learn as an agency and as a community and I think we need to have that sit down and figure out what can be done". On Monday, three more charges of first-degree murder were added, in connection with the deaths of Majeed Kayhan, 58, Soroush Mahmudi, 50, and Dean Lisowick, 47. -Sgt. Hank Idsinga said in a news conference on Monday morning. A dozen other planters have been seized as evidence. Authorities say he was there for a sexual encounter.

"If we have to go back further, we will", he said. "There are at least two sites that we do want to excavate where people might be buried".

Police had initially shut down persistent rumours that a serial killer was prowling the gay village, stressing that as recently as December, they did not know whether Esen's and Kinsman's disappearances were linked or if the men were still alive. But new evidence is expanding the victim profile, Idsinga said. "I can't give you any idea about a number, but I do expect more charges to be laid".

Toronto-Mississauga is Canada's largest city with six million people. They also continue to encourage homeowners who hired McArthur to reach out so their properties can be searched.

On Jan. 18, McArthur was arrested for Esen's and Kinsman's murders and on the same day the police arrived at Karen Fraser and her husband's home with a warrant telling them to evacuate the premises.

The police discovered Kinsman had a sexual relationship with McArthur and they began to follow McArthur.
