Google removed 700000 bad apps from the Play Store past year

With more than 2.8 million apps, Google's Play Store for downloading apps on Android devices is the largest app store in the world. The vast majority of these malicious apps (99 percent), never made it into the store and was outright rejected by Google's algorithms and security teams. For 2017, they not only improved on their ability to detect bad apps, they discovered new techniques that help them identify repeat offenders. The number is a 70 percent jump from the number of apps it removed a year before.

The company also says it banned over 100,000 developer accounts belonging to "bad actors" who tried "to create new accounts and attempt to publish yet another set of bad apps". Apart from that, the search engine giant also took down 100,000 bad developers previous year. Unlike many online publications, we don't have a paywall or run banner advertising, because we want to keep our journalism open, without influence or the need to chase traffic. However, it appears that Google is making inroads in taking out those kinds of apps before they are downloaded to the billions of Android users. Google Play Protect scans through Google Play Store looking for abusive or malicious apps.

Lastly, there is a type of malware called Potentially Harmful Applications (PHAs), which can harm users and their devices; like apps that conduct SMS fraud, act as trojans or steals user's personal information. Ahn says engineers removed tens of thousands of such apps a year ago.

These takedowns cover malware as well as apps that violate Google's policies on inappropriate content, such as apps with pornographic content, and apps that promote extreme violence, hate, and illegal activities.

Annual potential harmful app installs rates was reduced by 50 percent year over year.

Google's Files Go app, which was unveiled alongside other "Go" edition apps and Android 8.0 Oreo (Go Edition), has been updated with some new features. This revenue growth was actually eclipsed by three of its fellow top 10 apps, though: CBS at 128 percent, Starz at 147 percent and YouTube at 154 percent.

Google Play Protect took several security measures that were already present in Android and improved them. While small in volume, PHAs pose a threat to Android users and Google invested heavily in keeping them out of the Play Store. But, Google is trying its best to make Android and its applications as safe as possible.
