Pope meets with abuse survivors, weeps with them in Chile

Paula Podest Ruiz and Carlos Ciuffardi Elorriaga, both cabin crew managers and recipients of LATAM's "Service Leader" award - the company's highest distinction for employees - held their civil marriage ceremony in 2010.

As far as Catholic weddings go, it's pretty hard to beat being married by the pope - on an airplane.

His comment, made as he flew off for a visit to Chile and Peru, came after Hawaii issued a false missile alert that provoked panic in the US state and highlighted the risk of possible unintended nuclear war with North Korea.

Since they didn't have an official marriage certificate to sign, Pope Francis asked the cardinals with him to draft one, so they grabbed a piece of blank copy paper and each signed their names and what role they played in the ceremony.

The brief ceremony took place in the front of the plane on a two-hour flight taking the pope from the capital Santiago to the northern city of Iquique. The head of the airline served as the witness.

According to the couple, Francis blessed their rings and then said "We need a witness".

In the first such ceremony on a papal flight, Pope Francis performed a wedding for a steward and stewardess while flying between two Chilean cities on Thursday.

At this, the pontiff said: "Are you sure?", Ciuffardi told reporters. But the devastating quake in Chile that year destroyed the church they were set to get married in, so they opted for a civil ceremony instead. Francis motioned for them to sit next to him for the photo and asked if they had been married in the church.

The pair only asked the Argentinian to bless their marriage, but he had other ideas.

She said she and Ciuffardi also told the pope that when they first started dating, she was his boss at LATAM.

"And that's why the marriage works", Ciuffardi said.

The trials and difficulties of immigrants trying to keep their families together had left many feeling like "their lives had been watered down", he said as 50,000 people faced the stage and the ocean. I have married 40 couples.
