National Football League to see if Raiders violated Rooney Rule

Jon Gruden will return as the Oakland Raiders' head coach, bringing the longtime broadcaster out of the booth and back onto the sidelines.

Gruden's hire provoked some suspicion nearly immediately upon being reported last week.

"For someone to say for six years, 'When you are done broadcasting, we would love for you to compete here for a job as the head coach of the Raiders, ' that is not a violation of the Rooney Rule", Mehri told ESPN on Wednesday night.

The NFL has sanctioned teams for Rooney Rule violations in the past, issuing a $200,000 fine against Detroit Lions general manager Matt Millen in 2003 following the appointment of head coach Steve Mariucci. Helfrich has not worked in the National Football League but he has spent time as an assistant under Chip Kelly and Buccaneers coach Dirk Koetter.

Of course, the rule works only if the NFL enforces it, which is why the Fritz Pollard Alliance and others are so adamant that the league look into whether the Raiders took it seriously in this case. Those candidates were Oakland tight ends coach Bobby Johnson and USC offensive coordinator Tee Martin.

Whether it was hiring a young linebackers coach named John Madden as their head coach in 1969, a Super Bowl squad led by a Latino head coach and QB in the '80s or hiring the NFL's first Black head coach in Art Shell, the franchise often went against the norms of the day.

Oakland moved quickly through the process of tabbing Gruden, taking him away from ESPN, and firing then-head coach Jack Del Rio.

At the press conference announcing his hiring, Gruden said he had filled all three coordinator positions with Greg Olson (offense), Paul Guenther (defense) and Rich Bisaccia (special teams).

Carr averaged 14.5 FanDuel points this season while averaging 233.1 passing yards a game and completing 62.7 percent of his passes, with 22 touchdowns and 13 interceptions. On one hand, it would have been interesting to see how the pairing operated together, especially considering the success they enjoyed when Gannon played under Gruden. Almost a week later, it was announced that he would be getting a 10-year contract worth $100 million.
