Teacher questioning superintendent's pay removed from board meeting in handcuffs

A Louisiana teacher who spoke out about a superintendent's pay raise during a Vermillion Parish school board meeting on Monday was escorted out and handcuffed by a marshal, according to KATC.

Deyshia Hargrave, an English languages arts teacher at Rene Rost Middle Schools in Kaplan, confronted school board members during the public comments section of the meeting and was escorted out the second time she approached the podium - resulting in a scuffle in the hallway.

However, immediately after Hargrave stepped out of the meeting, the city marshal aggressively wrestled the teacher to the ground, slapped handcuffs on her, and forced her out of the building. He escorted her to his squad vehicle and then radioed the Abbeville Police Department to send a patrol unit.

The superintendent's pay raise would "basically be taking money out our pockets", she said.

"I have a serious issue with a superintendent or any person of leadership getting any type of raise", she said at the meeting.

As indicated by KATC-TV, Hargrave tended to the school board amid people in general remarks segment of the gathering concentrated on educator compensations and increases in salary. Superintendent Jerome Puyau told the station he called to make sure police knew the school board was not pressing charges.

Reggie replied, "You are going to leave, or I am going to remove you", while putting his hand on his handcuffs. She bonded out that night. She is heard reacting: "I am not - you just pushed me to the floor".

Not long after her comments, Puyau began to address her questions while Hargrave stood.

She was booked into the city jail on charges of remaining where forbidden and resisting an officer. It has directed all questions concerning the incident to the Vermilion Parish School Board.

It remains unclear whether the marshal was acting on his own accord or on orders of the board members, according to KATC.
