Platelet, blood donors needed

Platelet, blood donors needed

While supplies are adequate locally, the Red Cross cancelled more than 150 blood drives in the northeast and eastern United States due to harsh winter weather, said Red Cross spokeswoman Navtividad Lewis. The cancelations resulted in over 5,500 blood and platelet donations to go uncollected. Further adding to the diminishing supply, hectic holiday schedules, winter weather and an active cold and flu season collectively contributed to more than 28,000 fewer donations than what was needed in November and December.

The Red Cross says they will be accepting all types of blood but especially need Platelets, Type O Negative, Type B negative, and Type AB. Donors can save about 20 minutes by completing their health history the day they donate using Donor Pass at donateblood.centralbloodbank.org/DonorPass.aspx.

And it will support a nationwide effort to boost donations, as January is National Blood Donor Month. This network works in tandem, moving lifesaving donations throughout the system-once local patient needs are met-to help ensure blood is available when and where it's needed most. By giving platelets regularly, donors can help patients kick cancer and recover from other life-threatening illnesses and injuries.

Platelets are primarily used in the treatment of patients undergoing chemotherapy.

The need for blood is constant, so it is important that donations are given on an ongoing basis. Any healthy person 17 or older (or 16 with parental consent) may be eligible to donate, although there are height and weight restrictions for people 16 to 18 years old.

Every blood donation can be a life-saver for people in hospitals across the state, Michigan Blood stated. Blood donors should bring photo ID.
