North, South Korea to hold talks as Winter Olympics helps break ice

President Donald Trump's United Nations ambassador says the administration hasn't changed its conditions regarding talks with North Korea amid growing tensions over the North's nuclear and missile programs.

Some South Korean officials are hoping the two Koreas may even march under a single flag at a sports opening ceremony for the first time in more than a decade.

Critics called Kim's mixed message a gambit to drive a wedge between Seoul and Washington, weaken US -led global pressure and buy time for North Korea to ideal its nuclear weapons.

"The priority will be discussions over North Korea's possible participation in the PyeongChang Olympics and the Paralympics", he said.

Trump, in a Twitter comment, retorted, "Will someone from his depleted and food starved regime please inform him that I too have a Nuclear Button, but it is a much bigger & more powerful one than his, and my Button works!"

Five senior officials from each side will meet at the three-storey Peace House on the South Korean side of the Panmunjom truce village, with talks to begin at 10 a.m. (0100 GMT).

In that same speech, Kim added that North Korea would continue "mass producing" nuclear weapons, which prompted a response from Trump in which he mocked Kim by stating that the USA nuclear button was "much bigger & more powerful", and that his button "works".

Jon Jong-su has also attended various inter-Korean talks, beginning with the inter-Korean summit in June 2000. It needs to receive an additional quota to compete, and its International Olympic Committee representative, Chang Ung, headed to Switzerland over the weekend for talks with IOC officials, according to Japanese media.

Trump said he would like to see talks go beyond the Olympics and added: "At the appropriate time, we'll get involved".

She said before the United States would engage in serious talks with North Korea, Pyongyang would have to end its missile tests "for a significant amount of time" and be willing to discuss ending its use of nuclear weapons.

Hayley stressed during the interview that USA tension with North Korea is a "serious situation, and [Kim] can't sit there and imply that he's going to destroy the United States without us reminding him of the facts and the reality that if you go there, it's not us that's going to be detroyed, it's you".

South Korea's President Moon Jae-in persuaded the United States to delay joint military exercises until after the Olympics in a bid to reduce tensions and possibly create room for diplomacy.

Baek said other issues aimed at boosting cooperation between the two Koreas will be discussed.

"Basically, the two sides will focus on the Olympics".

Unification Minister Cho Myong-gyon has said his delegation has been preparing to discuss resuming reunions of family members separated by the Korean War. It's particularly unusual that the teams of negotiators, which are led by the Unification Minister and the CPRF Chairman, also include Vice Unification Minister Chun Hae-sung and CPRF Vice Chairman Jon Jong-su.
