Israel bans 20 global NGOs under anti-BDS law

A Quaker organisation which received the Nobel Peace Prize for rescuing refugees from the Nazis during the Second World War is among 20 activist groups whose members will be barred from entering Israel over their support for the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement. It follows up on a law passed previous year that bars visits by non-citizens and non-residents who support the boycott or belong to organizations that do.

The statement from Erdan said the NGOs being targeted were "the main boycott organizations which operate consistently and continuously against the state of Israel, while putting pressure on organizations, institutions and countries to boycott Israel".

"The boycott organizations must know that the state of Israel will act against them", Strategic Affairs Minister Gilad Erdan said in a statement.

Hugh Lanning, chair of the PSC, said in a statement: "This latest announcement should be a wakeup call for the United Kingdom government and all those who continue to describe Israel as a normal liberal democracy".

The BDS movement attempts to put political and economic pressure on Israel through various boycotts in order to purportedly compel the Jewish State to conform with worldwide law.

Supporters of BDS say a boycott will incentivize Israel to come to the negotiating table with Palestinians.

The groups that appear on the list are those that are "working in a clear and consistent manner to encourage a boycott of Israel and conduct a campaign of delegitimization against it", Hadashot News reported.

Asad Rehman, the executive director of War on Want, one of the organizations blacklisted by Israel, said the move is part of a wider crackdown on the BDS movement.

"We answered the call for divestment from apartheid South Africa and we have done the same with the call for Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions from Palestinians who have faced decades of human rights violations", said Kerri Kennedy, an AFSC official responsible for worldwide programs. "They must also take immediate steps to hold Israel to account for its continuing violations of Palestinian rights through measures such as the immediate suspension of its trade relations with Israel, including the arms trade".

"We will continue to stand up for peace and justice in Israel, occupied Palestine, and around the world".

"As the minister in charge of the Israel Entry Law, I made it perfectly clear that I would use my authority to prevent individuals and representatives of groups whose sole objective is to harm Israel and its security, from entering its borders". CODEPINK has long campaigned through BDS and solidarity tours, including bringing 800 people to the besieged Gaza Strip, to end the US-funded Israeli occupation and its abuse of Palestinian rights.

Ahmad Tibi, a member of the Arab Joint List, a coalition of parties representing Palestinian citizens of Israel in the Knesset, said it was ironic that Israel - a self-proclaimed "Jewish state" - is permitting figures such as Austrian far-right leader Hans-Christian Strache to visit the country while banning the members of JVP. As an American Jew, I am proud of my work to challenge Israel's policies of repression.
