Chelsea complete £15m signing of 'overwhelmed' Barkley from Everton

The England worldwide sealed a £15m transfer to Chelsea to become Antonio Conte's first signing of the January transfer window.

Chelsea have announced the signing of Ross Barkley from Everton, the playmaker joining the Premier League champions for a reported £15million.

Twenty-four-year-old Barkley has signed a five-and-a-half-year contract, which runs until 2023.

Barkley turned down a big-money move to Chelsea at the last minute as he wanted to focus on his recovery.

"Ross is a player we have long admired and are certain he will prove to be an important player for Chelsea. He is very strong physically and has good technique", Conte added.

Barkley is out of contract at Goodison Park at the end of the season and Toffees boss Sam Allardyce admitted on Thursday the club are "resigned to losing him".

For me Barkley has the ability to be one of the best players of his generation, his talents are such that only a handful of Premier League players could be his equivalent - for me he can be that good.

Speaking ahead of Chelsea's FA Cup third-round tie at Norwich on Saturday, and prior to the deal being confirmed, Conte said: "We are talking about an English player, a young player".

Many have questioned whether Barkley is good enough, but the fact Chelsea and Tottenham were battling for his signature, suggests that some very good judges in the game believe he is. It's a good opportunity for the club to buy this player.

Conte urged caution over expectations for Barkley.

While personally I'm not all that enthused about Barkley as a player, the price, if Law is correct, could be as low as £15m, which is absolute peanuts in today's market, especially for a young, homegrown player who a few years ago was going to be the next greatest thing.

'He had a bad injury & has not played for seven months. He remained with the Toffees undergoing treatment on his hamstring injury.
