UN Security Council meeting on protests a Trump 'foreign policy blunder' - Iran

China, Bolivia and new member Equatorial Guinea are the countries most likely to have an objection, as they claim the protest is an internal matter for Iran and not a matter that involves global peace and security. The days of pro-government rallies drew crowds in the tens of thousands.

U.S. Ambassador Nikki Haley spoke Friday after her country called the meeting.

British Ambassador to the United Nations Matthew Rycroft, left, speaks to American Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley before the start of a Security Council meeting on the situation in Iran, Friday, Jan. 5, 2018 at United Nations headquarters.

Iranian Ambassador to the United Nations Gholamali Khoshroo has slammed the U.S. government's recent attempts to intervene in the domestic affairs of the Islamic Republic. "The Iranian regime is now on notice, the world will be watching what you do".

"And let there be no doubt whatsoever, the United States stands unapologetically with those in Iran who seek freedom for themselves, prosperity for their families and dignity for their nation", she added.

He was replying to remarks by US State Department's Spokeswoman Heather Nauert, who said that the US was considering sanctions as a possibility of responding to Iranian authorities' practices against protesters.

Iran on Wednesday angrily accused the U.S.at the United Nations of meddling in its domestic affairs.

Iran's UN Ambassador Gholamali Khoshroo told the Security Council that his government has "hard evidence" that recent protests in Iran were "very clearly directed from overseas".

Russia's deputy foreign minister has called the USA proposal "harmful and destructive".

In a separate interview with RIA Novosti, Ryabkov said that his country rejected U.S. threats to expand sanctions against Russian Federation and to impose new sanctions against Iran.

Ryabkov said earlier on Thursday that the United States should not interfere in Iran's domestic affairs, and that Moscow remained committed to the 2015 worldwide deal to curtail Tehran's nuclear program, which US President Donald Trump has challenged. "Unfortunately, many of our European partners, as well as the United Nations, have thus far failed to forcefully speak out on the growing crisis in Iran". These protests were followed on Saturday and Wednesday by large demonstrations in support of the government.

Uncertainty over how long the protests will continue has prompted European countries to collectively take a much more cautious approach to what it says publicly than the US.
