Trump supports the Iranian people's struggle

Thierry Coville, an Iran specialist at French think-tank Iris, said Europe's business interests were at play, as well as concerns that Tehran should be handled carefully due to its involvement in Syria, Yemen and beyond.

"Iran's security and stability depend on its own people, who - unlike the peoples of Trumps regional "bffs"-have the right to vote and to protest". The pro-government marches, broadcast by Iranian state media, had the hallmarks of previous state-organized gatherings, with crowds waving Iranians flags and holding placards with slogans backing Iran's supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Look at the recent days' incidents.

He said: "The enemies have united and are using all their means, money, weapons, policies and security services to create problems for the Islamic regime".

Amir Ahmadi Arian, an Iranian author and journalist, wrote in an opinion column for The New York Times that Iran has seen protests over economic grievances before, but what makes these current ones different is the government can no longer rely on the support of people in rural areas.

The accuracy of the thesis that Iranian protests won't spread to oil workers the way they did in late 1978 will depend in large measure on whether Iranian government repression of discontent can be successful in putting down insurgency, as it was in 2009.

The protests then went nationwide, with calls for the overthrow the entire government. The protests initially started peacefully but turned violent in some cases when hooligans joined the demonstrators.

In a speech carried on state television, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei broke his silence on the protests for the first time since they erupted last Thursday.

President Trump's tweets on the ongoing Iran protests were immediate, have been daily and are likely to grow and transform into real change for Iranians. But so far, his administration has taken no steps. It is important to remember that the sequence of events that led to the fall of the Shah of Iran took months to unfold.

He said thousands were based overseas and trained by the United States, while internal "monarchists" and supporters of the exiled People's Mujahideen opposition group were also involved.

All those cities have seen protests in recent days. Iranian govt should respect their people's rights to express themselves. "These hard-earned rights will be protected, and infiltrators will not be allowed to sabotage them through violence and destruction".

It is hypocritical and heartbreaking to see that the global community and the United Nations simply watch while peaceful protesters are being beaten and killed: no words of condemnation have been spoken.

Many of those protesting appear young and unconnected to the educated, politically connected middle-class who poured into the streets to challenge the reelection of hardliner Mahmoud Ahmadinejad in 2009.

The despair that seems to be motivating the protests spells trouble for a government seeking to persuade demonstrators to work within the system. Final say on all matters of state rests with the supreme leader.

"The current US administration, despite its recent empty statements, has continuously insulted the great Iranian nation and displayed open hostility towards Iranian people", Khoshroo wrote, citing Trump's travel ban on Iranian citizens. The Iranian regime's response is anchored in three characteristics. Though initially a failure, street protests fanned by the Central Intelligence Agency ultimately pushed Mosaddegh out of power and cemented the rule of Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi.

As a long-time Iranian, I can tell you that the support of the United States and President Trump is invaluable to the ordinary Iranians: they feel helpless and alone in the face of the monsters who have been oppressing them for so long.

The United Nations' high commissioner for human rights, meanwhile, called on Iran to investigate all deaths in the protests and act "with great care so as not to further inflame violence and unrest".
