Group Protests Twitter for Not Suspending Trump's Account

The company also sought to counter assertions that controversial figures like Trump were kept on the platform largely because they helped Twitter's bottom line.

In a blog post Friday, Twitter said it would not block the accounts of world leaders even if their statements were "controversial" because of a need to promote discussions about public policy.

In his tweet Tuesday evening that sparked the latest controversy, Mr. Trump wrote of North Korea's Kim Jong Un: "Will someone from his depleted and food starved regime please inform him that I too have a Nuclear Button, but it is a much bigger & more powerful one than his, and my Button works!"

But Twitter reiterated its stance, saying: "Elected world leaders play a critical role in that conversation due to their outsized impact on our society".

It said such a move would also not silence a world leader, but it "would certainly hamper necessary discussion around their words and actions".

A Twitter spokesperson confirmed to The Hill that the tweet does not violate its terms of service because it is not a "specific threat".

During a speech that Kim Jong-un gave on New Year's Day, he warned the USA that North Korea's nuclear forces have been "completed", and his launch button was always in reach.

Protesters this week projected messages on Twitter's headquarters in San Francisco after the North Korea tweets, saying that either Trump or chief executive Jack Dorsey "must go".

"We review tweets by leaders within the political context that defines them, and enforce our rules accordingly", the statement said. "We work hard to remain unbiased with the public interest in mind", it added.

Critics said that tweet and Trump's continued presence on the network endanger the world and violate Twitter's ban on threats of violence.

Jack Dorsey has defended his decision to allow the President to continue using Twitter, stating that President Trump's tweets were "newsworthy".

If you're still using Twitter, you probably won't be surprised by the fact that the company retains its right to impose its own rules selectively - after all, it's been doing so for years.
