Weather warning for strong winds

The Met Office says gusts of up to 80mph could hit the coast on Wednesday, as the tail end of Storm Eleanor sweeps across.

The Met Office has warned of "very strong winds" arriving this evening and continuing overnight.

The Met Office has issued several national severe weather warnings due to the potential for travel disruption as people return to work following Christmas and New Year.

Flying debris could lead to injuries or danger to life, while some damage to buildings is likely, it has said.

A yellow weather warning, which means people should "be aware", is in place from five past midnight on Wednesday until 10pm.

Gales are predicted, with gusts of 60mph to 70mph likely.

Carol Holt, the British Environment Agency's flood deputy manager, said that strong winds and large waves, combined with high tides, could trigger coastal flooding from Tuesday until Thursday.

Residents in coastal areas have been warned of possible 80mph gusts as Storm Eleanor approaches.

The warning is valid from 4pm today (Tuesday) until 10pm tonight. If you are in areas affected by the flood warnings please be prepared and where necessary take action to protect property, friends and family.

The Environment Agency is expecting to issue flood alerts too, ahead of those high spring tides.
