LG Preps an 88-Inch, 8K OLED TV for CES 2018

LG Preps an 88-Inch, 8K OLED TV for CES 2018

The place was held by LG's 77-inch TV, which only featured 4K resolution.

LG will also be showcasing its 2018 speaker lineup at CES 2018, along with its new 32-inch UHD 4K monitor (model number is 32UK950). With that measurement, LG still won't beat the world's biggest display in a TV, but it definitely seats atop in terms of largest OLED panel.

As such, if price alone isn't the factor, the lack of quality content shot in native 8K resolution should be another reason not to opt for the TV just yet. The entertainment industry is just catching up with support for 4K and will take a bit longer to rally behind 8K at this rate. Unfortunately, not much else is known about this TV.

The television, which measures a huge 88 inches across in its display, packs a total of 7780 x 4320 pixels into all that screen real estate. LG's 77-inch 4K OLED display, the OLED77G6P, now costs a mere $20,000. As for the competition, Samsung might not come into the picture in this category as the company has already shifted its focus from OLED TVs to QLED TVs.

"The successful development of the world's first 8K OLED display is a milestone for the 8K era and underscores the exciting potential of OLED", In-Byung Kang, Executive Vice President and Chief Technology Officer at LG Display, said in a statement. Now we have curved screens, 4K resolutions, multiple HDR standards, and quantum or nano particles.

LG Display claims OLEDs are self-illuminating and therefore not as severely hampered by aperture ratio, making them optimal for 8K panels, unlike transmissive LCDs which require more powerful backlight units that increase energy consumption, material costs, and the bulk of the final products. The former is the arm which sells OLED panels to all TV brands with OLED TVs on the market today, including Panasonic and Sony. However, with the unveiling of the new OLED monster, LG is showing off just how well it now handles its own ultra HD OLED technology for television displays. We'll know what LG and Samsung, among others, have in store for us once CES 2018 kicks off starting January 9.
