Hyderabad: IMA gives strike call to private hospitals against NMC

Ananth Kumar, Union Minister in Lok Sabha said the bill will be sent to a standing committee.

Supporting the fraternity, private hospitals also kept their outpatient departments closed. "This bill is anti-poor, anti-people, non-representative, undemocratic and anti-federal in character", newly-appointed IMA national president Dr Ravi Wankhedkar said. "This is very cruel", said a woman at the state-run General Hospital.

The Indian Medical Association has called off its pan Indian doctors' strike after the Medical Commission Bill was made a decision to be sent to a standing committee.

Parthiv Sanghvi of Indian Medical Association says that the central government has left us with no option but to call it a "black day" in the history of medical profession. It will replace the Medical Council of India (MCI) besides allowing practitioners of alternative medicines, such as homoeopathy and ayurveda, to practice allopathy after completing a bridge course.

"We want the central government to reconsider the National Medical Commission Bill".

Addressing a press conference here, Dr. Parthiv Sanghvi of IMA, said, "The IMA is against the National Medical Commission because it is a government body where 90 percent members will be nominated by the government". As per the reports, the government is bringing up the new bill today.

IMA President expressed his apprehension that the bill will increase corruption in medical education and will push up cost of medical education very high while standard of medical education will fall definitely.

The bill is to be presented in the winter session of the parliament that calls for dissolving the Medical Council of India (MCI) and set up the National Medical Council in place to curb the issues ailing the medical education in the country.

Dr Veeranna said the appointment of members to the commission is not by election, but rather by nomination by the Union government.
