All the airports involved are now back online, according to CBP, though some are still experiencing effects from the outage.

Worldwide travelers returning to the USA on New Year's Day faced massive frustration nationwide as the computer systems operated by Customs and Border Protection failed.

On the first day of the new year, long lines of passengers entering the United States halted at global airports in New York, Florida, Texas and California.

A few minutes later, another tweet said the customs processing issue was resolved.

"Just landed back in the United States and I'm stuck in the customs line because the border patrol servers are down nationwide", wrote Pearse Adams. All airports are now back on line. "During the disruption, CBP had access to national security-related databases and all travelers were screened according to security standards", the Customs and Border Protection agency said in a statement. All airports were back on line after wait times for travelers that were longer than usual, it said.

Making the situation worse is that Monday was a busy day, with a lot of people returning home from the holiday. "It's all over the place". Addressing security concerns, the US Customs and Borders Protection said that there was no indication that the service disruption was malicious in nature.
