More pregnant women are using pot, study finds

The women were 18 to 44.

Despite the trends found in the report, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention advises against using marijuana when pregnant, planing to become pregnant and breastfeeding, as tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC, can negatively affect a baby's development. Numerous chemicals in marijuana, like tetrahydrocannabinol, known as THC, could pass through a mother's system to her baby.

In 2018, marijuana will be legally available for recreational use, suggesting that that even more pregnant women may have access to and indulge in it. The study participants completed questionnaires about their marijuana use and took a cannabis toxicology test during their standard prenatal care visits from 2009 through 2016.

Prenatal marijuana use also increased among women of all ages.

The researcher said the amount of marijuana consumed and how often a person uses it is a factor.

The number of women who self-reported using marijuana during their pregnancy rose from 2.4 percent in 2009 to 3.9 percent in 2016, according to a new study published Tuesday by the Journal of the American Medical Association.

Officials in Colorado, where recreational pot was legalized, have warned women not to smoke it during pregnancy, Gizmodo reported. The age ranges of the sample included females aged 12 to 17 years (1.4 percent), 18 to 24 years (15.8 percent), 25 to 34 years (61.6 percent), and more than 34 years (21.2 percent).

"Of concern" to the researchers was that fact that marijuana use was particularly common among younger pregnant women.

An expert speculates that the rise might be partially explained by the increased availability of legal marijuana in recent years.

A new study reveals that more pregnant woman are turning to the use of marijuana. "So I think the idea that use is rising is just because of the greater legal exposure to marijuana that women have today versus 20 years ago". Among women 18-24, marijuana use climbed from 9.8 percent to 19 percent.
