South Florida scores late TD to outlast Texas Tech in Birmingham Bowl

Flowers finished with 311 yards passing and four touchdowns. He fumbled on the second play of the second half, setting up Texas Tech's second touchdown of the day that gave the Red Raiders a 17-10 lead. Flowers completed just 4 of 14 passes for 52 yards and a touchdown. Instead, the Red Raiders finish an up-and-down season at 6-7. Shimonek started the first 11 games of the season for Texas Tech before being benched in the team's regular season finale against Texas.

The McCants touchdown capped a wild fourth quarter in which USF outscored Texas Tech 21-10, with Flowers having a role in all three scores.

For three quarters, it appeared as though Texas Tech may get by the game using its defense, going against the grain of what is typically expected from a Texas Tech team.

But the Red Raiders left Flowers and the Bulls too much time to strike back, and strike back they most certainly did. Shimonek threw for 416 yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions, but USF was unable to convert either of those turnovers into points.

Texas Tech had a odd day in the Birmingham Bowl on the offensive side of the bowl. Then there were moments that reminded fans why Kingsbury made a quarterback change against Texas.

Texas Tech continued to pile up the yards but the South Florida defense kept the Red Raiders out of the end zone and off the scoreboard in the second quarter.

Batson, on a reverse from wide receiver Keke Coutee, escaped multiple South Florida defenders in the backfield before breaking loose for a 19-yard rush before being forced out at the USF 2-yard line. Stockton, meanwhile, carried the ball 18 times for 103 yards.

At the beginning of the fourth quarter, Flowers broke for a 29-yard run to put South Florida deep in the red zone. The Red Raiders held South Florida to 132 total yards in the first 30 minutes and contained Flowers.

The Bulls began the half with the ball but Flowers was sacked on second down and fumbled the ball to the Red Raiders' DeMarcus Fields.

But South Florida scored 28 points in the second half and finished the game with 561 total yards.

Flowers did not blink, however, and led the Bulls on a 7-play drive that ended with a 26-yard pass to McCants to give the Bulls a 38-34 lead with 16 seconds left in the game.

After quarterback Quinton Flowers connected on a 64-yard touchdown pass to Marquez Valdes-Scantling, South Florida looked to be in control by taking its first lead of the contest at 31-27 with 4:26 left in the fourth.
