Raul Castro to remain president of Cuba until April

Raul Castro is stepping down as Cuba's president in April.

The Cuban government announced Thursday that it will postpone a historic presidential election in 2018.

Initially, Feb. 24 was the date set for when the National Assembly would meet and pick the country's next president.

A Castro will be Cuba's president for at least a little longer.

Cuban officials made a decision to push back the highly anticipated transition because the government in September delayed legislative elections in the wake of damage caused by Hurricane Irma.

Castro had publicly stated his intentions to step down on February 24, but Cuba's National Assembly voted to extend the current legislative term to April 19.

The delay in the transfer of power opens up more questions about who could be Castro's successor. The announcement did not mention such action.

When Castro steps down as president in April, Cuba will make a transition to the first non-Castro president in more than 40 years.

"I do not see a scope in his thought or in his expression", Antonio Rodiles said in a recent interview. Fidel Castro died in November 2016. (However, several Castros are likely replacements.) Raul Castro has served as president officially since 2008, but he served as acting president from 2006 until 2008.
