The lack of present day Donna, coupled with the fact that the character is talked about in the past tense, has led many fans to the conclusion that the character must have passed away. For starters, Meryl Streep's character does not, at first glance, seem to appear in any new scenes in the trailer. Hugh Skinner (Les Miserables, Hampstead, Star Wars: The Last Jedi) is young Harry, and Jeremy Irvine (Stonewall, The Beautiful Fantastic, Fallen) is the young Sam.

However, it ought to be noted, Streep is in the movie and the scenes she's filmed are completely new - not taken from the original.

Already finding herself in a predicament, Sophie's world is turned upside down after learning her grandma (Cher) makes an unexpected visit to their Greek island of Kalokairi.
