MLS Expansion: Cincinnati, Sacramento both deserve spots

MLS Expansion: Cincinnati, Sacramento both deserve spots

In Cincinnati and Sacramento, where strong support for their respective USL teams made them top MLS expansion candidates, the news that MLS has announced a press conference in Nashville on Wednesday to presumably announce it as the 24th MLS team triggered lots of angst from fans in the two cities.

It looks like Detroit's bid for its own Major League Soccer team might be a miss.

Nashville meets the three criteria deemed most important to MLS - an approved stadium, a soccer-hungry public and an ownership group with deep pockets to cover the $150 million expansion fee.

Several other cities are vying for future MLS expansion, with Cincinnati, Sacramento, and Detroit as the furthest in the running for the next team announcement, The Washington Post reported.

"League officials and the MLS Expansion Committee will continue to work with the four finalists and plan to have more details shortly", a MLS statement reads. John Ingram, lead investor of Nashville's expansion group, will also be present.

It is too close to call between Sacramento and Cincinnati who are both worthy of an MLS team in this round of expansion. The new teams will not begin play until 2020.
