Apple Has Plans for Unified Mac, iPhone, and iPad Apps

The company will soon allow developers to design a single app that works with a touchscreen or mouse and trackpad.

Neither macOS nor iOS have any shortage of native applications, although the Mac App Store isn't very popular; most apps for Macs are likely to come from the web.

Suggesting a healthy app economy, downloads across Apple's App Store and Google Play increased more than 8% over the past year, App Annie recently found.

Apple has reportedly been developing a strategy for combining its Mac and iOS ecosystems for some time, though. But the tipsters said that the plan is "still fluid" and may see the implementation undergo major changes or even get scrapped altogether. The mobile platform was originally built using custom versions of Apple's OS X kernel and development tools, and macOS has since liberally borrowed both features and aesthetics originally introduced in iOS.

A newly published report suggests that Apple is unifying the process of developing apps, allowing macOS users to run iOS applications without any hiccup next year.

According to the report, Apple is now working on a project codenamed "Marzipan".

ZDNet has reached out to Apple for comment and will update this post should we hear back.

Apple's apps initiative is part of a larger, longer-term push to make the underpinnings of its hardware and software more similar.

That would make it easier to create a single operating system for all Apple gadgets, something Microsoft has already done with its desktops, laptops and Surface tablets. They also advised the iPhone and iPad users to avoid downloading or purchasing the game at all cost despite "Cuphead" not being available on the device. Around the same time, Apple software chief Craig Federighi called the blending of iOS and macOS "a compromise". But a unified platform was bound to happen, especially now that the company continues to invest in mobile computers like the iPad Pro and the modern Macbook.
