You Can Manage Your Identity on Facebook Using Face Recognition

Starting today, however, the social media juggernaut will expand on how it uses the technology by notifying you when someone uploads pictures with you in them, even if you weren't tagged in them.

An additional feature will also inform users if anyone across the entire social network tries to post a profile picture containing them, Joaquin Candela, Facebook's director of applied machine learning, said. However, Facebook notes that if your tag suggestions setting is now set to "none", then your default face recognition setting will be set to "off" and will remain that way until you decide to change it. Previous settings were more complex and made users select (or not) different facial recognition features. Currently, the site will prompt you to tag people it recognizes in photos and videos you upload. So, if someone posts your photo to a private group you're not a part of, you won't get a notification about it. We're all aware that Facebook knows more about us than we'd like, but this might be a step too far.

In the near future, Facebook also plans to use face-recognition technology to notify you when someone else posts your image as their profile photo. By looking at photos from an event, for example, and identifying the faces, Facebook could know everybody who was there and know they might be connected. If you're a little sensitive about how often you show up in pics on the internet, Facebook has a new privacy tool that may interest you. It may allow you to remove this feature for other people and yourself, but Facebook hasn't earned any trust on this issue.

The same technology is also being used for a new tool that supports people with visual impairments. That includes the United States but not Canada and Europe, where regulators have raised concerns about Facebook's existing facial recognition features and how the company complies with privacy laws.

"The words "face recognition" can make some people feel uneasy, conjuring dystopian scenes from science fiction", wrote Rob Sherman, Facebook's deputy chief privacy officer.
