Jayda Fransen Suspended From Twitter

British Minister of State for Digital Matthew Hancock tweeted that the account suspensions were a "good step forward" for Twitter.

One rule regarding violence takes into account Twitter users' activity offline, forbidding users from affiliating with organisations that promote violence against civilians either on or off the site.

"Any tool that enables censorship online can be used against potentially everyone - regardless of ideology", Emma Llansó, the director of the Free Expression Project at the Center for Democracy and Technology, said after several far-right groups were removed from social media sites this summer.

If a user posts hateful symbols or images, it must be marked "sensitive media".

Twitter suspended the accounts of well-known white nationalists Monday, moving swiftly to enforce its new rules aimed at reducing what it deems abusive content. No such symbols or imagery will be allowed on people's profiles.

Hate imagery will now fall under the rubric of Twitter's "sensitive media policy", and that will include any "logos, symbols, or images whose objective is to promote hostility and malice against others based on their race, religion, disability, sexual orientation, or ethnicity/national origin".

But even then it can be hard to tell whether a company is implementing its rules fairly or singling out certain people or groups that it may not like, Llansó said.

Twitter suspended accounts belonging to the far-right group Britain First, shortly after updating its policy on hate speech and "abusive" content.

Among the accounts to be suspended is that of deputy leader Jayda Fransen, who gained notoriety when three anti-Muslim videos she posted were retweeted by US President Donald Trump.

The Business Insider reported that Britain First is a far-right group that posts what some consider xenophobic, anti-Islam, and racists' messages on social media and that Britain First has about 1,000 members, according to the group Hope Not Hate.

James Fields Jr., accused of running down Heather Heyer during a protest in Charlottesville, Virginia, was photographed carrying a shield from Vanguard America, which was banned from Twitter on Monday.

There is one notable exception: the policy changes don't apply to military or government entities.

"We will immediately and permanently suspend any account we identify as the original poster/source of non-consensual nudity and/or if a user makes it clear they are intentionally posting said content to harass their target", the email read.
