Pruitt returned to the SEC in 2014 to be the Georgia defensive coordinator for two seasons before landing back in Alabama in 2016 and winning another championship. From 2014-15, Pruitt coordinated the No. 7 and No. 17 overall defense in the country while at Georgia.

Sources say the only question that remains is whether he will coach in Alabama's semifinal game against Clemson. He has also worked under Saban, serving as Alabama's director of player development from 2010-12.

Pruitt, though, was never a head coach at even the high school level. Alabama led the nation in scoring defense and ranked second in total defense a year ago.

Alabama ranks No. 2 in the nation in total defense, allowing just 257.8 yards per game this season. Pruitt, who is the fourth Saban assistant to become an SEC head coach, is also regarded as one of the top recruiters in the conference.

Pruitt has won two national championships during his 11-year collegiate coaching career with Florida State in 2013 and Alabama in 2016. Fair has been with Colorado State since 2015 where he's helped the Rams' secondary have success. "Now I'm not sure that he can go in and steal Alabama commits this year, especially given the short window of time, but the future is bright from a recruiting standpoint".

Last season, Alabama offensive coordinator Lane Kiffin accepted the head coaching job at Florida Atlantic in December and attempted to stay on Alabama's staff through the playoff, but it didn't end well. If Alabama wins, it will move on to the College Football Playoff National Championship Game on January 8. Pruitt and Sherrer also coached together at Hoover High School from 2005-06 when Pruitt served as the defensive coordinator and Sheerer as a defensive assistant.

Pruitt replaces Butch Jones, who was sacked November 12 after going 34-27 overall and 14-24 in Southeastern Conference competition in five seasons. In five years as Tennessee's head coach, Jones was 34-27 and 14-24 in conference play.

One of the primary attributes that attracted Tennessee to Jeremy Pruitt was his ability to recruit.
