Same-sex marriage now allowed in Australia, 1st wedding likely in February

Before Question Time and the legalisation of same-sex marriage was passed, Bill Shorten asked Malcolm Turnbull if Question Time can be abandoned to allow for the quicker passage of same-sex marriage legislation.

Cheers and applause broke out as lawmakers voted in favor of the bill following hours of debate and emotional speeches at Parliament House in Canberra.

In 2004, Australia changed its marriage law to interpret marriage is exclusively between a man and a woman.

Warren Entsch, a long-term advocate of marriage equality within the conservative government, helped draft the bill and was the first to speak for it in the House on Monday.

Additionally, the passing of the same-sex marriage law will be a strategic political win for Turnbull, who has been strongly opposed by his predecessor Tony Abbott, a staunch supporter of conventional marriage.

More specifically, the Austrian Supreme Court ruled to change the current definition of marriage, which states it can only be between "different sex" partners, to switch in a definition that doesn't mention sex or gender.

The bill passed with only five MPs dissenting.

"The Parliament has got on with it and we have voted today for a equality, for love, it is time for more marriages, more commitment, more love, more respect, and we respect every Australian who was voted, those who voted yes, and those who voted no, this belongs to us all, this is Australia!".

"Australia you have demonstrated you love us, we love you, let's hope the politicians can be part of the love train, and later on let's party", she said.

"And I say to JP, my dear, beloved friend who I miss so dearly: JP, that's what we are doing".

Congratulations to Australia, most especially to those who fought long and hard to make this a reality! According to a survey, 62% of Australians supported the legalization of same-sex marriages.

The Greens also proposed amendments, including one to ensure civil celebrants can't reject same-sex marriages - the vote was also lost on the voices.
