Mueller issues subpoena to Deutsche Bank in Russian Federation probe

Sekulow told CBS News' Major Garrett that Trump's legal team confirmed with sources at Deutsche Bank that the reports indicating Mueller's team requested Trump's bank records were false.

The special counsel is investigating whether the Trump campaign colluded with Russians connected with the Kremlin in the lead-up to the 2016 election.

Trump's relationship with Deutsche Bank stretches back some two decades and the roughly $300 million he owed to the bank represented almost half of his outstanding debt, according to a July 2016 analysis by Bloomberg.

Mueller's investigation - which is looking into alleged Russian interference into last year's USA election and whether Trump's winning campaign assisted in those efforts - appears to be entering a new phase.

"The latest news supports our view that Mr. Mueller is too conflicted to investigate the FBI and should step down in favor of someone more credible", the newspaper said.

An internal investigation carried out by Deutsche Bank didn't yield any evidence of connections between the client relationship with Trump and the bank's mirror trades affair, a person briefed on the matter said.

The day before Mr. Trump tweeted: "I had to fire General Flynn because he lied to the Vice President and the Federal Bureau of Investigation".

A 2000 General Accounting Office report that detailed those figures said that $36 million came from congressional appropriations and $16 million from other federal agency costs.

Deutsche Bank for months has rebuffed calls by Democratic lawmakers to provide more transparency over the roughly $300 million Trump owed to the bank for his real estate dealings prior to becoming president.

In June Deutsche Bank cited privacy laws when it rejected a request by House Democrats to provide details of Trump's finances.

So far, the special counsel has charged four people as part of the investigation including former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort and former national security adviser Michael Flynn.

A USA official with knowledge of Mr Mueller's probe said one reason for the subpoenas was to find out whether Deutsche Bank may have sold some of Mr Trump's mortgage or other loans to Russian state development bank VEB or other Russian banks that now are under U.S. and European Union sanctions.
