Trump Says He's Encouraging Orrin Hatch To Run For Another Senate Term

Last week, amid the chaotic upheaval caused by Donald Trump's Twitter endorsement of three anti-Muslim videos created by an ultranationalist British group, Utah Senator Orrin Hatch told reporters that Trump was "one of the best presidents I've ever served under", adding, "the reason is he's not afraid to make decisions". Orrin Grant Hatch to seek re-election.

The former MA governor was reportedly seriously considering running for Senate in his new home state of Utah, under the condition that the state's longtime senator, Orrin Hatch, decided not to run for re-election in 2018.

The Atlantic reported in April that Romney, formerly governor of MA and the 2012 Republican presidential nominee, was considering the possibility of running for Hatch's seat.

Romney has been a critic of Trump's when he ran for president and since he assumed office. "I don't know that he knows what he's going to get with Romney, but it's not going to be what he's got with Hatch", Jowers reportedly said. While he and Hatch toured a Salt Lake City food pantry alongside leaders of the Church of Latter Day Saints, Trump sidestepped questions of whether he was trying to block Romney from running, saying only "He's a good man".

Romney was planning to run for the position held by Hatch, on the assumption the senator would retire, according to a report by Politico.

A source close to Breitbart News chairman Steve Bannon told the Washington Examiner that he would absolutely consider backing Hatch.

Trump has mostly tried to sway Hatch behind the scenes.

Hatch has not publicly declared his plans.

Trump considered picking Romney as his secretary of state a year ago but opted instead for Rex Tillerson. Trump previously said he is doing it for Hatch.

Trump called Hatch a "fighter" during a speech at the Utah State Capitol later Monday. "His promises are as worthless as a degree from Trump University", Romney said.

But the two will fly together on Air Force One to Salt Lake City on Monday where the president is expected to slash the sizes of Bear Ears and Grand Staircase-Escalante national monuments.
