Officer Kenneth Copeland Of San Marcos, Texas, Fatally Shot While Serving Warrant

Drivers along Interstate 35 from Austin to San Marcos will notice a large presence of first responders Tuesday afternoon as they move fallen Officer Kenneth Copeland's body from the morgue to the funeral home.

Officials did not disclose the identity of the suspect nor the charge for which he was wanted.

San Marcos officer Ken Copeland was killed after the suspect shot him multiple times, CBS Dallas reported.

The statement says Copeland was wearing a protective vest at the time of the shooting.

The San Marcos Police Department and Hays County Sheriff's Office is reportedly on scene. It's unknown if the injury was from an officer's gun or his own.

Copeland joined the department March 30, 1998, serving SMPD for 19 years and 9 months as a Police Officer.

A press conference is scheduled for 6 p.m. "Ken's a hero", Stapp said. He worked just about every day off to provide for his kids and because he knows we're shorthanded and we need the help. Copeland leaves behind a wife and four children. Cecilia and I extend our heartfelt condolences to the officer's family and to the entire San Marcos Police Department.

It happened near Bowie Elementary School located at 4020 Monterey Oak around 3 p.m. We remember the sacrifices our men and women in law enforcement make every day.

San Marcos Mayor John Thomaides called Copeland a "member of our family" and asked for the city to rally around men and women in law enforcement.
