Giants & Cardinals wait on Giancarlo Stanton, with Dodgers looming

According to the MLB Network's Jon Morosi, the Miami Marlins have agreed in principle to the framework of trades with both the St. Louis Cardinals and San Francisco Giants that would see them move Giancarlo Stanton, who is coming off an incredible season that saw him win the 2017 National League MVP.

Not that it would matter.

Stanton has met with both the Giants and Cardinals and is reconsidering both teams after Miami reportedly told him that, if he doesn't accept a trade, the team will deal their other key players to save salary and he will be the lone star on their team as they go through another rebuild.

But for luxury tax reasons, the Dodgers are unable to dive completely into trade talks with the Marlins this winter.

By all accounts, the Giants and Cardinals remain the most aggressive pursuers, but Stanton is believed to be holding out for the Dodgers to make a realistic push.

With the December 11-14 winter meetings approaching, trade talks involving Stanton could come to a head in the coming days as the scaling-down Marlins are eager to shed most, if not all, the remaining $295 million of his contract. Stanton could ask that the opt-out be moved to a different point in the contract, as a condition for waiving his no-trade clause.

At the very least the ball is in Stanton's court, it seems.

As of Sunday, the Dodgers and Marlins were still in contact regarding Stanton, but have not made progress toward a deal, according to one source.

If it comes down to the Giants and Cardinals, then we're by far the favorite. The Marlins are said to have interest in second baseman Joe Panik, who won't be a free agent until 2021.
