Jimbo Fisher leaving FSU to become head coach at Texas A&M

With Fisher an Aggie, the coaching search madness of the 2017-18 offseason turns its eyes to Florida State, which now has to hire a head coach.

The Seminoles (5-6) need a win Saturday to become bowl eligible for a 36th consecutive season. But Francois clearly would have preferred his head coach to have said something.

Fisher told university president John Thrasher yesterday that he was resigning to accept Texas A&M's offer. One of the first tasks for Fisher in College Station will be to put together his first recruiting class, and with this being the first year with an early signing period, things will get interesting on the recruiting trail. His $5.7 million salary is the sixth-highest among FBS coaches this season. Sumlin was 51-26 in his career at Texas A&M, but the administration had grew exhausted of Sumlin after his apparent failures to build upon the 11-2 record in his first season at the school.

Students were talking about who they heard were potential new coaches but many students expressed frustration and disappointment in Fisher's decision.

Fisher previously spent time at Auburn (1993-1998) and LSU (2000-06) as an assistant coach, making this a return to the SEC. He led the Aggies to an 11-2 record in his first season in 2012, including 6-2 in the Southeastern Conference which included a win at top-ranked Alabama.

Texas A&M has invested heavily in facilities the past five years, including a football operations center.

"Evidently he feels like that's the right move for him and his family and the right time to do so", Swinney said at an ACC title game news conference. The top name so far has been first-year OR coach Willie Taggart, who took over at OR last offseason after turning around the South Florida program.

Fisher leaves Florida State after going 83-23 in eight seasons. I don't have any doubt about that.
