Winter Session of Parliament From December 15 to January 5

The session would be ending on January 5, 2018.

Cabinet Committee on Parliamentary Affairs on Friday finalised the dates of Winter Session of Parliament.

"We request and seek cooperation from all parties, including the Opposition, for smooth functioning of both Houses to make this session fruitful", said the parliamentary affairs minister.

Finance minister Arun Jaitley had also commented that the Winter Session schedule would be such that it would not overlap with the assembly elections, and it would be a "regular" session. December 25, 26 will be Christmas holidays during the 14-day session, the minister added.

Kumar alleged that the Congress was levelling allegations out of desperation and frustration as it would be routed in assembly elections in Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh.

"The delay in announcing the dates for Parliament session triggered a war of words between the BJP and Congress. Gandhi said, "... in order to avoid the questions and answer ahead of Gujarat elections, the government has taken the extraordinary step of not holding a winter session when it should be held".

"We expect that we will have attendance on all 14 days, including the New Year's day", he said.

The Winter session of Parliament will begin from December 15, a day after polling for the Gujarat Assembly elections concludes. The Congress Parliamentary party has written to the President claiming that not convening the Parliament session on time would set an "unhealthy precedent".

Deputy Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha Anand Sharma said the opposition will corner the government on issues of corruption, unemployment, sliding economy due to demonetisation and flawed Goods and Services Tax (GST), farmers plight and internal security. Some important bills are expected to be introduced in the session, including one on triple talaq.
