Jude Law in talks to star alongside Brie Larson in Captain Marvel

Jude Law has entered talks to join Marvel's Captain Marvel, as first reported Wednesday by Variety. Although not said directly in this casting report, in comic books Mar-Vell is the Kree warrior who was Carol Danvers' namesake and mentor as the original Captain Marvel. In his secret identity "Walter Lawson", Mar-Vell befriended Carol Danvers, and he was present during the accident that transformed her.

The altercation leaves her with the mighty powers of strength and flight.

Sources have toldVariety that The Talented Mr. Ripley star is now in negotiations to play Doctor Walter Lawson, otherwise known as Mar-Vell, the Kree Hero who was the original Captain Marvel in the comics.

He's played lotharios, vicious villains and movie heroes, but he's never appeared in a Marvel movie, until now.

The most recent screenplay is by Geneva Robertson-Dworet (Tomb Raider) working from previous drafts by Meg LeFauve (Inside Out) and Nicole Perlman. A photo was recently revealed of him as Albus Dumbledore in Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald, and now this news.

The Captain Marvel movie will be a period piece set in the 1990s of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and will feature the shapeshifting aliens known as the Skrulls, rulers of a rival empire to that of the Kree. It is now unclear on what role Law will play. He is also attached to reprise his role as Doctor Watson in a third Sherlock Holmes movie opposite Tony Stark himself, Robert Downey Jr.
