Twitter removes verified checkmarks from several white supremacists' profiles

Twitter's move to clarify the meaning of its verification badge and revoke the status for people who are famous for their racism or sexism or hate speech are great first steps.

According to Robinson, Twitter notified him on Wednesday that it was removing his verified badge permanently because his account didn't confirm to its verification guidelines.

"Verification has always been perceived as an endorsement", the company tweeted Wednesday. "We should have addressed this earlier but did not prioritize the work as we should have", Twitter said on its official @TwitterSupport account.

Twitter is overhauling the way it gives out blue verified badges, and on Wednesday removed them from accounts belonging to at least two prominent white nationalists. "In the meantime, we are not accepting any public submissions for verification and have introduced new guidelines for the program", the company said it its tweet.

These new guidelines are the indirect result of the social media platform facing huge backlash for verifying the account of the organiser - Jason Kessler- of the white supremacist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia. But having a verified account on Twitter has become a status symbol that confers perks such as appearing at the top of searches.

The new rules come one week after Twitter announced that it would pause its verification process over concerns of how the blue check for verified users is interpreted.

Richard Spencer responded to his lack of verification with a question on Twitter.

The public refuted this claim, arguing that if that were true, the company would verify everyone who could prove their identity with a driver's license or passport. "We will continue to review and take action as we work towards a new programme we are proud of". It removed the verification badges from Kessler and Spencer, and suspended the account of known alt-right troll account Baked Alaska. The company will now remove verification from anyone who misleads people in their display name or bio, promotes hate or violence, engages in harassment on the platform, engages in violent and risky behavior, shares disturbing imagery or expresses self-harm.

As part of an update to its guidelines, several white supremacist - including Richard Spencer and English Defence League founder Tommy Robinson - lost their blue ticks.
