In a blog post, he wrote: "Something that wouldn't have been obvious without looking at the data is that the uptake of new versions seems to be slowing down - we can see this by looking at the last few contour lines at the top right of the graph, corresponding to the most recent Android releases".

Google's Project Treble promises to help speed up vendor releases of new Android versions, but only devices like the new Pixel 2 that ship with Android Oreo can take advantage of it.

To be precise, the stats are based on active devices interacting with Google Play over the period of a week. The company's latest mobile operating system, Android Oreo, which was rolled out in August, has made a minimal rise of 0.3 percent.

At this point, it's hard to know what Google can do about Android fragmentation, short of convincing everyone to buy Pixel or Android One devices.

"At this point, we should expect that there are more than one billion devices that are two years out of date!"

As it turns out, most other phone makers have confirmed that at least the flagship phones will get the newest Android as an update before the end of the year. While there is some hope that Google has started on the long road to recover with Android 8.0, it will be years before Google comes close to catching Apple, providing it ever does.

According to Google's numbers, Android 6 (Marshmallow) still runs on 30.9% devices, the highest among all Android iterations, followed by the even older Android 5.1 (Lollipop) at 20.8%.
