Messi Confirms He Will Miss Argentina Vs Nigeria Friendly

The goal by the Manchester City forward gave the South Americans a deserved win at Moscow's renovated 81,000-capacity Luzhniki stadium.

Sampaoli added: "We played in a courageous, bold manner".

"Some of the things that we planned worked in this clash against this tough opponent", Argentina manager, Jorge Sampaoli, told reporters.

"We all played with intensity and took the match seriously".

Argentina's friendly against Russian Federation was the first test match held at Moscow's Luzhniki stadium, the venue for the opening game and final of next year's World Cup. "We made some mistakes in the first half but in the second we improved".

The coach singled out Aguero for his performance.

However, Sampaoli said Argentina had been too cautious at times and "there were situations when we weren't able to apply the final touch".

Argentina have always been struggling for the ideal "number 9" to compliment the great Lionel Messi, and along with Gonzalo Higuain, Sergio Aguero has often been criticised for his performances for La Albiceleste.

Konstantin Rausch headed a goal-line clearance shortly after halftime to cut out a chipped cross from Lionel Messi.

Aguero's header found the back of the net in the 86th minute, the striker beating veteran goalkeeper, Igor Akinfeev, after his initial shot was blocked by the Russian defence.

Akinfeev produced an impressive one-handed stop to keep Aguero's low effort from 20 yards out of the bottom-right corner midway through the half.

The five-time Ballon d'Or victor further rubbished the claims that some players in the squad are selected because they are his friend and said that accusations are absolutely disrespectful.
