Palace boss Hodgson opens up on links to Jack Wilshere

Wilshere was left out of the England squad by manager Gareth Southgate for their friendlies with Germany and Brazil, despite a number of players dropping out through injury.

Gareth Southgate believes Jack Wilshere is being played out of position at Arsenal and says he is not a No. 10.

"You can accelerate people's progress and we saw that with a lot of the players we brought into the England team".

Wilshere has found his opportunities limited at Arsenal this season after spending last season out on loan at Bournemouth.

Wenger has played Wilshere as a No 10 this season. I work with [Palace sporting director] Dougie Freedman and we talk about potential players, and Jack Wilshere's name has never been mentioned in this room.

I think he is a talent and I really respect him as an individual. Southgate holds him in high esteem but his slide down the Arsenal pecking order and the difference of opinion over his deployment means he may need a new club, a new position or both in January.

"Now you are telling me we have been linked with him, but by who?"

Wilshere, whose contract expires at the end of the season, has scored twice in eight appearances for Arsenal but is yet to start in the Premier League.

"I will tell you who, his agent - because that's where newspapers get their stories from". "Of course I want to stay". But players like Jack and Alex Iwobi that came from the academy just feel more for the club. The midfielder has suffered so many injuries but now is the time for him to really kick on and break into the first-team to prove he is good enough to play for England again. I've got a great relationship with Wenger and he's assured me that I will get some playing time.
