Gold medalist Aly Raisman says United States national team doctor sexually abused her

Six-time Olympic medalist and three-time gold-winning gymnast Aly Raisman is the latest to allege sexual abuse by Dr. Larry Nassar, a MI doctor who worked with the United States gymnastics team.

USA Gymnastics said in a statement Friday that Raisman sharing her personal experience took "great courage" and it is "appalled by the conduct of which Larry Nassar is accused". Per the Lansing State Journal, more than 140 women and girls have filed suits related to his alleged sexual misconduct, with almost as many reporting him to the cops.

She said, "Why are we looking at why didn't the girls speak up? I think that needs to be addressed", she said. Nassar, who was USA Gymnastics' team doctor for almost two decades, was sacked in 2015 and is facing nearly two dozen sexual assault charges against him; he's also set to be sentenced next month on three federal child pornography charges.

Raisman is the latest gymnast to speak out against Nassar after Jessica Howard, the United States national rhythmic gymnastics champion from 1999 to 2001, and Jeanette Antolin, a Pan American Games silver medallist, also revealed they had been the victim of sexual abuse on the same programme in February.

Raisman said she was 15 when she was first treated by Nassar. More and more women have recently spoken out against him, including another Olympic gymnastics star, McKayla Maroney. Raisman was the captain of the 2012 and 2016 Olympic gold-medal winning USA team.

Raisman told "60 Minutes", in an interview scheduled to air Sunday, that she spoke to FBI investigators after serving as national team captain at the 2016 Games in Rio de Janeiro. In a statement to "60 Minutes", it added that "USA Gymnastics is very sorry that any athlete has been harmed".

In her tweet, Maroney mentioned a specific instance of sexual abuse when she was 15 years old, in which she alleges Nassar gave her a sleeping pill on a team flight and assaulted her in his hotel room upon landing. Dantzscher initially filed as "Jane Doe" but came forward publicly to "60 Minutes" in February.

The former athlete, who claims to be "angry", wants to "just bring change" so that young gymnasts "never have to live this again".

He also faces charges in state court in MI, largely related to allegations that he digitally penetrated women during medical exams for his own sexual gratification.

Nassar began working with USA Gymnastics as an athletic trainer in 1986 and became the national team doctor in 1996. USA Gymnastics hired Kerry Perry as its new president and CEO on Tuesday after president Steve Penny resigned in March after 12 years on the job. Raisman and Maroney have both said that Nassar's harassment came in the form of "treatments".

USA Gymnastics approved a new safe sport policy as a result of the recommendations made by the review. USA Gymnastics now has the power to withhold membership from clubs that decline to report claims of abuse. The organization also named Toby Stark, a child welfare advocate, as its director of SafeSport.
