Apple's first scripted TV show will star Reese Witherspoon and Jennifer Aniston

Apple has ordered a TV series starring Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon, two of the most successful actresses of their generation, in the clearest sign yet of the tech giant's intent to make a big splash in Hollywood.

The series does not have a title or any finished scripts yet, but Apple has already placed a two-season straight-to-series order that will encompass 20 episodes after a bidding war between multiple outlets, per The Hollywood Reporter.

There's no word yet on when either series will debut or exactly how Apple will distribute them (all at once or weekly). After releasing a pair of forgettable series that failed to gain any type of traction - Planet of the Apps and a Carpool Karaoke spinoff - Apple last month finally stepped up to the plate and inked a multi-million dollar deal to revive the 80s sci-fi adventure series Amazing Stories.

The series is described as "an inside look at the lives of the people who help America wake up in the morning, exploring the unique challenges faced by the women (and men) who carry out this daily televised ritual".

The show will be Aniston's first regular series role since "Friends" ended in 2004, and Witherspoon's first ever in an ongoing show.

Aniston executive produces through her Echo Films banner; Witherspoon through her Hello Sunshine production company, and Ellenberg through Media Res.

The concept of the show, which is about the viciously competitive behind-the-scenes of morning television, comes from Ellenberg, and it will also use Brian Stelter's book Top of the Morning: Inside the Cutthroat World of Morning TV as source material.

Apple's other scripted series, Amazing Stories, is a revival of the Spielberg anthology show from the late 1980s. Spielberg, Fuller, Amblin's Darryl Frank and Justin Falvey and "Bones" creator Hart Hanson are exec producers.
