Roger Goodell Reportedly "Furious" At Being Offered Non-Guaranteed Contract

Roger Goodell Reportedly

Buried in ESPN's report on Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones threatening to sue the owners if Goodell's contract is extended (first reported by the New York Times on Wednesday) is a nugget about Goodell being "furious" over the owners' insistence that his new contract should be more performance-based. Per the New York Times, it was a call that ended up backfiring on Jones as the owners not only failed to see his perspective but chose to give Jones even less power than before.

The Times reported there was a conference call with Jones and the NFL's compensation committee - owners from the Chiefs, Falcons, Giants, Patriots, Steelers and Texans - and Jones told them legal papers were drawn up and would be served this Friday unless the committee drops its plan to give Goodell an extension.

Lockhart added that the league is aware of Jones' potential lawsuit, which apparently has been sparked by star running back Ezekiel Elliott's six-game suspension over alleged domestic violence. "Another source said that Boies also might be asked by Jones to produce a report showing the negative economic impact that Goodell's major decisions, including player discipline, have had on clubs".

Bringing on such a high-profile figure to help upend Goodell's suspension is a clear indication that Jones is not messing around here.

Patriotic Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has been vocal about Goodell's mismanagement of the escalating situation, and has reportedly lawyered up to block the renewal of Goodell's lucrative National Football League contract. "He feels as if the owners have made a lot of money and he should be compensated accordingly", the source said. Jones previously said he believed players should stand for the anthem. Jones is one of the most powerful owners in the league, but he's in a battle he may struggle to win.
