DC Comics Signs Brian Michael Bendis to Exclusive Contract

Writer and artist Brian Michael Bendis had a major hand in some of the best things Marvel comics have done recently-including the introduction of Jessica Jones and Miles Morales as Spider-Man-so people were understandably taken by surprise today, when it was revealed that he'd be heading over to work for DC Comics.

"We are beyond thrilled to welcome Brian Michael Bendis exclusively to the DC Family with a multiyear, multi-faceted deal", DC wrote in a statement on its official twitter account. "Change is good. Change is healthy".

He started his tenure at Marvel that same year with Ultimate Spider-Man, which retold the early days of Peter Parker from a fresh perspective, free of decades of continuity. Word on the street is he had a say in the Marvel Studios films until 2015 as well, not to mention his work on various Marvel video games and animated series.

Others compared his departure to DC to that of Jack Kirby, who co-created the X-Men, Thor and other heroes in the 1960s and left for DC in the 1970s when his relationship with Marvel soured.

Bendis, now of Portland, Ore., has been Marvel's top writer for more than a decade with stints on nearly every major series including "The Avengers", "Spider-Man", "Iron Man", "Guardians of the Galaxy" and "The Defenders" to name a few. They include Spider-Man, Jessica Jones, Defenders and Invincible Iron Man.

This is real. I love you all.

While he had worked with DC characters before (see the 2007 collection Batman: The Greatest Stories Ever Told, Volume 2), Bendis has long become synonymous with the Marvel universe. I for one, can't wait to see what he does.

The excitement about working on DC characters has outweighed any feelings of trepidation.
