Penn State, Michigan State Are On Pace For A Seven-Hour Game

Matt Coghlin kicked a 34-yard field goal as time expired, giving No. 24 Michigan State a 27-24 victory over No. 7 Penn State on Saturday at Spartan Stadium.

Well, the Penn State Nittany Lions fell from grace last week with their first loss of the season, to Ohio State.

Seventh-rated Penn State entered the game as a 9-point favorite after its first loss of the season, 39-38 at Ohio State a week ago. It was fourth-and-three from the MSU 31, and PSU chose to go for it instead of kicking a long field goal in the sloppy conditions.

The Spartans held Penn State star Saquon Barkley in check with 131 total yards, including zero rushing yards in the first half.

Prior to the delay, Lions quarterback Trace McSorley threw touchdown passes to DaeSean Hamilton and Saeed Blacknall, moving him past Christian Hackenberg atop Penn State's career passing touchdown list with 49. As magical as last season felt, this year felt similar.

Unfortunately, MSU fans were forced to wait even longer on Saturday as the game was delayed in the 2nd quarter due to severe weather conditions.

Following a turnover on downs by Penn State, Michigan State took over with four minutes remaining and drove for the game-winning score.

Penn State coach James Franklin has a 0-10 road record against ranked opponents, including five losses with the Nittany Lions. His teams have lost all 10 of them. They travel to Columbus next weekend for a game against Ohio State, the victor of which will slip into the driver's seat of the Big Ten East race as the championship game in Indianapolis grows larger on the horizon.
