TOLO News says 3 bodies taken to Wazir Akbar Khan hospital along with 12 wounded. A Reuters witness reported that a loud blast shook windows and doors in the area.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack, which the health ministry said had killed at least three people and wounded 15.

In May, a massive truck bomb blast ripped through the diplomatic district, killing at least 80 people and wounding hundreds in a powerful explosion described by officials as "one of the biggest" to have hit the capital of Afghanistan.

The target of the attack was not immediately clear but as well as foreign embassies, the area contains a defense ministry department dealing with foreign relations and several private businesses, including a barber and a travel agency.

The site of the explosion is about 500 meters (yards) from the American Embassy.

Ambulances were seen rushing the injured to nearby hospitals.

The attack in central Kabul took place near the United States embassy.

A suicide bomber reportedly detonated his explosives in 14th Street in Wazir Akbar Khan - inside the Green Zone.

It was the deadliest suicide attack by insurgents in Afghanistan since the Taliban were driven from power by US-led forces in 2001.
